Climate adaptation of the built environment has become a need to protect buildings, infrastructures, communities, and economies. Future efforts must focus on scaling up adaptation measures, taking advantage of digital innovations like digital twins and artificial intelligence-driven climate modelling, to ensure that the built environment can withstand increasingly severe climate challenges, while securing social and environmental equity.
The ENACTIVE-DM project aims to develop a European professional master’s program in close collaboration with stakeholders. As a one-year joint master’s degree with 60 ECTS over two semesters, it will train the next generation of engineers with a framework suitable for adapting the built environment to climate uncertainty.
The initial consortium is composed of four academic partners, namely Lusófona University, IHE Delft, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and University of Granada. The study plan will be organized into focus areas, covering monitoring and digital twin development, reliability and risk analysis, systems engineering, urban sustainability, and rehabilitation and retrofit of infrastructure. The students will benefit from extensive international collaboration and training opportunities with stakeholders, preparing them to pursue an academic or professional career.
The ENACTIVE-DM project will support the organization of remote and in-person meetings, stakeholder engagement sessions, workshops, guest lectures, and a summer course to design a fully integrated curriculum and output multiple partnership and agreements to implement the master’s program.
This project will increase the European competitiveness in engineering and asset management, support the digital transition, and contribute to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal by fostering the sustainability of built environment, green jobs, and the development of skills necessary for Europe's transition to a low-carbon economy.
